Measures of EffectivenessThe previous manufacturing processes have been evaluated based on the following design criteria: appearance, cost, functionality, and time-to-market. Appearance relates to questions such as does the design look aesthetically pleasing, does the design appear to meet the design requirements, and does the design look modern and structurally sound. Cost is a penalty that includes required tooling, material used, and manufacturing process implemented. Functionality determines whether or not the process satisfies the design requirements and standards. Time-to-market starts from Forward Project Planning, gate #1 in the IPD process, and ends at Production, gate #6 of the IPD process. Some of the factors relating to the time-to-market are the time required to complete design documentation; manufacture the design; make changes to the initial design; and get parts to build prototype, pilot, and production units.
